Gender Equality in the Global Workplace

What is Gender Equality?

Gender equality is the idea that every person should have the same opportunities, rights, and treatment regardless of their gender identification. It's an idea that questions gender inequality and emphasizes how critical it is to dismantle gender dependence, preconceptions and norms that limit people because of their gender. Equal compensation for comparable or equal work will be a requirement for workplaces and removing obstacles to women's equal and full involvement in the workforce.

According to Demetriou, N. (2024), Unity is necessary to bring gender change, and this can only be done when all people, regardless of gender, recognize the wrongs of gender bias and actively seek to eliminate it so that everyone has equal rights and opportunities.

Current State of Gender Equality Globally

The World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2024 paints a bleak image of the current and future evolution of gender parity across four indices: political empowerment, health and survival, educational attainment, and economic participation and opportunity. According to the analysis, achieving full gender parity would take 134 years, or until 2158. This is equivalent to five generations beyond the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) objective.

What are Challenges to Achieving Gender Equality

  • 1.      Cultural and Social Barriers

Traditional gender roles prevent women from pursuing higher education and career prospects in many cultures.

  • 2.      Organizational Policies

Women are disproportionately affected by policies that fail to take caregiving responsibilities into consideration since they often perform more caregiving tasks.

  • 3.     Wages Gap

Globally, women earn 16% less than males on average. A number of variables, including discrimination and occupational segregation, affect this difference.

Some Impact of Gender Inequality

·         Economic Impact

According to McKinsey Global Institute estimates, by 2025, achieving gender equality may boost the world economy by $12 trillion.

·         Positive Morale and Retention of Employees

Women may leave the workforce at greater rates and have worse general morale as a result of gender inequity.

·         Innovation and Productivity

Businesses with diverse executive teams have a 21 percent higher chance of outperforming their competitors financially.

What are the opportunities to perform for Advancing Gender Equality?

·         Policy Changes

putting into practice regulations including thorough prevention of discrimination safeguards, flexible work schedules, and equal pay audits.

·         Training and Development

·         Leadership Representation
